The North Wind and the Sun were arguing about which one was stronger. At that moment, they both noticed a traveler walking down the road with a cloak on. So the Sun, seeing an opportunity, turned to the Wind and said:
“I know how we can solve this argument. Whichever of us can make that traveler take off his cloak shall be regarded as the stronger one. You go first.”
So the Sun hid behind a cloud, and the Wind began to blow a powerful gust of wind upon the traveler.
But the traveler only held onto his cloak tighter. And so the Wind blew again, even stronger than before. But the traveler only held on tighter. Again and again the Wind tried, but to no avail.
Finally the Wind had to give up his effort in despair. He turned to the Sun and said:
“Try as I could, I could not get the traveler to let go of his cloak. Now it’s your turn.”
At once the Sun, grinning brightly, came out from behind the cloud and shone in all his glory upon the traveler. And the traveler, suddenly feeling very warm, promptly removed his cloak.
